“And poor Jack, he believed you would choose him. That he could build a life with you.” Ned’s bitter laugh brings me back.

My hands are ice cold. He’s right about me.

“Don’t worry, Zoey. I’ve ensured he won’t want anything to do with you anymore.”

The familiar blanket of shame comes over me. I’m such a piece of shit.

“Aren’t you going to thank me?”

“For what?”

Fatigue is slowly settling in. My thoughts are getting muddled together.

“Getting Jack out of your life, of course. It’s what I do.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m glad you’re seeing my importance in your life. The things that I do for you. I really hope you’re grateful.”

My leg bobs again. I’m anxious to get more information about Madison. To get her home.

“Yes. I’m grateful. Jack needs to leave me alone.” I cringe as I play into his game. Jack steps closer to me, and I raise my hand for him to stop.

“I’m excited about our future,” Ned says enthusiastically.

My instincts scream in warning. I force myself to focus.

“It’s time for Madison to go home. She’s waiting for her parents to pick her up at Forks Park,” Ned says.

I scramble to grab a pen, reach for the notepad, and scribble. Adrenaline pumps through me.

Forks Park. Madison is there.

Jack is running out of the room, and I barely hear Ned.

“Don’t forget, Zoey, I’ll always help you remove the wrong men from your life.”

“Is she there, Ned? Ned? Is Madison at Forks Park?”

The line is dead. I slam down the headset and run after Jack into the station.
